Pada akhir tahunGus Dur berhasil lulus kelas remedial Arabnya. Dan pada tahun iamulai belajar tentang Studi Islam dan bahasa Arabnya. Saat ia bekerja terjadi peristiwa G30S, Kedutaan Besar Indonesia di Mesir diperintah untuk melakukan invesrigasi pada pelajar universitas dan memberikan laporan kedudukan politik mereka dan Gusdur diberi perintah tersebut, Ia ditugaskan untuk menulis laporan.
