Not sure about where the whole just add a host here or there comes in to it Subnetting isn't that forgiving! Randomly adding hosts and networks sounds dangerous in my personal opinion. If there is some valid way of using that technique to reverse engineer a question than I am certainly very unaware of it. If I may offer my own thoughts on reverse engineering a sub-netting problem?
