When I was exhibiting in Beijing everybody said, 'Oh, this child is such a genius, she can draw like Matisse'. But this is not the case, it's just when I see something I like I can capture it with lines. I can't really explain why and how, I just do it naturally. When Jordy turned 10, she started drawing in colour and then in more abstract forms.

While trying various media and ways of drawing and painting, she also did traditional art because she wanted to go to art school. So I decided to study abroad. The decision to study design instead of painting at university level echoed what she had always felt early on - how she wanted it to be more than just art, to be something that can contribute to the world.

Everybody went to see my work and admired it and I just felt I had made no contribution to the world. But the real merging of art and product design came after she had her work exhibited at the Venice Biennale. It was a conceptual architectural model made using paper-cutting technique. The cloud lamp was the result of this idea. She used the same technique, paper-cutting, to make two-dimensional forms and figures in the lamp shades.

You have the audience and you have the artworks but I think art should be part of our lives, an integrated element," said Jordy. But the real highlight of the show is the Cloud Chandelier, a thinking cloud-like form. Much of her work, in fact, comes in the form of objects. As an interior designer, Fu has worked for clients as varied as Bloomberg London — for whom she remixed her cloud sculpture, creating it out of discarded computer wires — and a 2-year-old, whose bedroom she made magical.

Fu looks to emotions and nature — even fashion — for her work. Which one do you think defines you the most?

I work in many different disciplines, from architecture, interior design, paintings, sculptures, furniture and product design to fashion. I believe there are no boundaries in between. Creativity has no limits. The only limit is your imagination. As an artist and architect, my role is to make this world a better place and that's what I am aiming to do.
